It had been 20+ years since we last made the trek south to San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja California, MX, so it was a thrill to be going back. The lagoon is one of the 3 southern-most stopping points on the gray whales annual 6,000 mile migration from Alaska, where they come to breed or have their calves.  With the close encounters we had on our kayaks off La Jolla’s coastline (http://www.zenfolio.com/maryandandysphotos/edit/blog.aspx#207269159), we knew what was to come was going to be even more thrilling.

In 1988 Mexico established the El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve to include San Ignacio Lagoon, which is Latin America’s largest wildlife sanctuary. Not only is the lagoon a gray whale sanctuary, but it is one of only two undeveloped nursery and breeding grounds in the world for the whales. It’s also home to one of the largest nesting-pair of osprey in the entire solar system.

Unfortunately, a few days prior to our departure date, I got the beginnings of a sore throat that eventually turned in to a full-blown cold and laryngitis. In my attempt to get rid of it, I passed it on to Mary, so we both ended up spending the entire trip coughing and hacking – I’m sure the other guests loved us.  On a positive note, with Mary and me wheezing, clicking and grunting in an attempt to communicate with one another thru our laryngitis, we were able to tune in to the whales communication frequency and announce our arrival. Because of that, our first morning on the water was nothing short of spectacular. I think even Capt. Ahab would have enjoyed it as well.
