Let the cold begin!

As we packed in advance of our trip this past Sunday, the temperature in San Diego was in the upper 80’s, low 90’s.  This made it rather difficult to pack wool socks, long underwear, parkas, hand/feet warmers, etc.  Fortunately, during the week the weather got much more fall like, and when we left on Saturday it was cold and drizzling.  Cold is somewhat relative though.  When we arrived in Winnipeg this afternoon, the temperature was 23F and snowing.  It’s a good thing I was wearing a pair of long-sleeved shorts when we got off the plane, or it might have been uncomfortably cold.  The forecasted high for Churchill on Sunday is 5F, with an overnight low of 4F.  Great, we won’t have to change into anything warmer if we go out at night!

The tour company has everyone meet in Winnipeg, and from there we take a chartered plane into Churchill.  For those of you geographically impaired, Churchill is in the upper right hand corner of Manitoba, along the Hudson Bay, or directly north of Duluth, MN by 1200 miles, or so.  If you’re still lost, GFE*!

Tonight we had dinner at Earl’s, which everyone we spoke to highly recommended.  I think they are either relative’s of Earl and are compelled to send tourists there, or have never eaten there themselves.  Mary’s margarita was heavily watered-down lemonade, which had flavor only after we asked for another (maybe the only?) shot of tequila.  Even then, it was weak.   My beer, which was a local brew, was flavorless as well.   For dinner, we had BBQ ribs and Cajun chicken.  Tasty, but nothing great.  When we were done with dinner, our waitress asked if we wanted separate checks.  Huh?  Since I knew Mary didn’t have any cash on her, I felt safe opting for a single check, and wanting to keep my reputation of being gallant intact.

  Tomorrow we spend the day touring Manitoba, and finding out how well our long underwear works.
