Day 5
Weather report: Cloudy and blowing snow. Temperature, -28C, with a windchill of -38C Most of the day was spent driving around looking for bears, since that’s kinda’ what we’re here for, but didn't expect to see much, based on yesterday's news. However, in the morning we saw several sleeping bears, so that gave us some hope. They’d lie around for most of the time spent with them, pop their head up for a minute or two, and then lay back down. At one of the locations we stopped at, waaaay across the ice, I spotted a mother and 2 cubs strutting across the ice. Well, mom was struttin' and the kids were hanging back being kids. I guess even young bears are too cool to be seen with mom. Going here and there, stopping to sniff the ice, tripping over their feet, stealing candy from the store, etc. They were at least ½ mile out, so you needed a big lens to capture them and fortunately, we had one. As they got closer to us, they turned away from us, so all we got were butt shots. It was still pretty cool to see them. Other than the bears, we saw a red-tailed fox and 3 ptarmigans (birds). Both were too quick to take pictures of, though. |
